Originally a partnership,
Artscapes became a sole proprietorship under Glenn Young after
Kathi decided to dedicate more time to other interests. Fortunately
she has remained on staff on a part time basis.
Artscapes specializes
in the conservation framing of original and valuable works of
art and historical materials. Artscapes is well versed in the
proper usage of materials and techniques established by the Library
of Congress for the preservation of fine art and is recognized
as a true museum framer by accredited museums and conservators.
Artscapes provides
consulting and training services to museums. We are currently
providing training services to the Cantor Center and the DeSaisset
museum. Artscapes also has classes and workshops in museum framing
and frame design. Many artists and professional framers and frame
shop owners received training from Glenn Young.
Our client population
is comprised of accredited museums, well known galleries, recognized
artists, art and antique collectors, art dealers, interior designers.
Artscapes is proud to provide framing services to the Stanford
University's Cantor Center for the Arts, The DeSaisset Museum,
The History Museums of San Jose, The Tech Museum, and many other
high profile art organizations. These clients expect state of
the art handling of their artwork. And this is the level of care
we are committed to providing all of our clients.
The framers at Artscapes
each have a minimum of 12 years experience in framing. All have
their specialties.
Glenn Young
is a formally trained artist who works in the sculptural medium
and in black and white photography. He has worked as a photographer
in the Peace Corps in West Africa, and as a freelance photographer
in California. He has also taught photography, serigraphy, woodworking,
and picture framing.
Glenn is well versed in the variety of art media and materials,
and specializes in the handling and framing of works of art on
paper. He consults to major museums, and does training of their
personnel.
Currently he is on the island of Maui setting up the new Artscapes/Maui
facility and training new staff. When he can get away from the
shop, he goes windsurfing on the north shore.
Kathi Douglass - Kathi works quietly behind the scenes
keeping everything moving smoothly. She was instrumental in creating
Artscapes, and is essential in keeping it together.
Kathi is a framing instructor and teaches museum matting and mounting,
design and frame assembly.
Away from the shop Kathi enjoys playing music, volunteering for
conservation efforts, and travelling with her husband Harley and
crazy dog Hank.
Randal Hinz - Getting Randy to work at Artscapes is a major
coup. He started framing in his early artist days and has become
one of the best watercolor painter of flowers in the world. Framing
is an enjoyable way for him to take some breaks from his painting
and work with his close friends. Check out Randy's resume. His
work is in major collections, and he is represented by the prestigious
Foster White Gallery in Seattle.
As far as framing goes. Randy is one of the most creative and
daring designers I've seen. He has 30 years of framing experience,
and has managed the well known Vision Gallery frame shop in San
Francisco. When it comes to detail work, fabrics, fillets, and
design; Randy is on the cutting edge.
Chris Newcomb - Chris has 15 years of framing experience.
He is skilled in French matting-which involves the drawing of
paint lines with a ruling pen, and the layering of marbled and
leaf papers. He is also very experienced in the framing of antique
European posters, which because of their size, require special
handling and techniques.
Chris is also a local soccer celebrity. He is probably
the world's best soccer ball juggler and has performed at halftime
shows for the Earthquakes and he has also performed at the opening
ceremonies at the World Cup Games held in the United States.
When Chris isn't framing pictures, you'll find him playing with
his five beautiful kids.
